Community supports amputee mom at benefit

HOUSTON Friends of Katy Hayes organized a night of music and dining at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Hayes survived a flesh eating disease that forced doctors to amputate both arms and legs days after she gave birth to her third child.

Saturday's benefit included an auction to raise money for the family's medical expenses.

Hayes' husband, Al Hayes, was amazed by the turnout.

"There aren't words to say how I feel about it," he said. "These people all have jobs and kids and families of their own and have dedicated a full-time schedule on top of their existing obligations to help us out. And I'm very humbled and grateful."

The money will help pay for prosthetic limbs and home renovations to accommodate Hayes' disability.
