"We've got to do better with providing kids with the opportunity to go to college," said Senator Brown. Brown talked with teachers from all across Ohio about ways to prepare students for college and close the learning gaps in urban and remote rural areas.
One of the major obstacles is lack of resources. Many city school districts don't have funding for new books or computers. Owens Community College is counting on federal dollars to continue offering the retraining courses many have turned to during the down economy. However, many grants are based on graduation rates, something that tends to be lower at community colleges, where many students start working before completing graduation.
Brown's bottom line is he wants Washington to focus on giving every student an equal education.
