Houston to pay $3M to consultants to review fingerprints

Houston will pay nearly $3 million to review fingerprints processed by the police department's latent print lab. That money will be paid to a team of consultants. They'll be looking at nearly 5,000 violent crime cases from the past two years, plus a backlog of other cases. HPD's fingerprint lab came under fire after an audit found that examiners failed to accurately analyze prints on evidence, and sometimes missed them altogether.

Three lab employees were put on administrative leave, and a part-time worker resigned under pressure.
