Girl nearly crippled by violent attack

HOUSTON The girl can barely walk after her leg was nearly ripped from her hip. Investigators gathered at Crime Stoppers headquarters Thursday morning, determined to find a suspect. The attacker has been described as a young man, possibly a teenager. He's a Hispanic male between the ages of 15 and 20.

Authorities told Eyewitness News the attack happened on August 8. The 14-year-old girl was in a remote area of Spring when she was grabbed by the suspect. He so violently grabbed the girl's leg that her femur was torn from her hip. The suspect then shot the girl in the arm and the head. Officials say no sexual assault occurred. An oncoming car scared off the suspect.

The victim's mother, who declined to be identified by name, says her daughter has had a slow and painful recovery.

"She's having a hard time will all this," the girl's mother said. "She's not really scared, but she's more scared to go to school because she's afraid that she might see somebody there that she recognizes."

Detective Schifani with the Harris County Sheriff's Office said, "The girls were screaming for help, and by grace of a miracle, there was a car coming around the corner. We believe that the headlights from this car spooked the suspect enough for him to run."

The violent attack only lasted a few minutes, but the girl now has three metal pins in her leg. Now authorities are afraid the attacker may target another innocent victim. They would like anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
