Inmate's death in police custody investigated

HOUSTON Houston police are awaiting autopsy results in the death of a male prisoner at 61 Riesner about 1pm last Wednesday, July 15.

The prisoner, Lee Roy Johns, 56, was found unresponsive during a routine cell check. Further checking determined Johns had no pulse and was not breathing. Jail medical staff were summoned immediately and performed first aid until HFD paramedics arrived and transported Johns to Christus St Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Johns had been arrested earlier that morning for driving while intoxicated and had a prior medical history.

This case is also being investigated by the HPD Internal Affairs Division.
