What comes next for NASA?

HOUSTON They have developed a video you can watch at keepamericainspace.com. It highlights how far NASA has come in the past 40 years and includes snippets from employees of NASA contractors detailing why continued exploration, they feel, is so important.

The future of space exploration is under review. The space shuttle is expected to be retired by the end of next year. A presidentially appointed panel, the Augustine Committee, is expected to render a recommendation by the end of August about what it deems is the proper course for NASA to proceed.

In the meantime, those businesses dependent upon the space agency are left with somewhat uncertain futures. They struggle to plan. Some are attempting to soften the blow of future layoffs by announcing some now. United Space Alliance, for example, says it will lay off 40 percent of its Houston workforce by October 1. That's about 150 workers.
