"I most definitely agree," said Janet Cotlar. "I think my mom is alive and my husband too because of this hospital. "
Cotlar's mother has been a patient at M.D. Anderson for 15 years, and her husband has been for eight years.
"My grandma and my daddy are still alive and that means they've been treated well," said Juliana Cotlar.
There are a number of reasons M.D. Anderson keeps winning this award. One is that their wait times are shorter for new patients. Another is simply that they do a good job. They now have 200,000 cancer survivors who come back every year for an annual checkup.
Last year, M.D. Anderson treated 90 ,000 patients and 13,000 were in clinical trials. The center spent $488 million in cancer research.
"It's a mixture of our outcomes, which are very good, our reputation and the services we provide," said Dr. Thomas Feeley with M.D. Anderson.
Around the corner, Methodist Hospital was celebrating, too. It's the only Texas hospital on the honor roll. It ranks #20.
"Now that we're there, we're going to continue to migrate up the list. We'll start pushing Johns Hopkins and Cleveland Clinic and the mass generals," said Methodist CEO Dr. Ron Girotto. "That's our goal."
New technologies like the ICU robot make Methodist different. Its heart program is one of 15 that was ranked outstanding.
"In the past several years, we really had a culture change, patient safety, patient first, doing everything that's right for patients," said Methodist Cardiology Chairman Dr. Miguel Quinones.
Also listed by U.S. News and World Report were Texas Children's Hospital, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, Texas Heart Institute, Memorial Hermann TIRR, Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center and the Meninger Clinic.
