Texans conserving electricity during heat wave

HOUSTON On Wednesday, we set a new record for electricity usage. Consumers used 62,768 megawatts of power between 4pm and 5pm Wednesday. That exceeded the previous record set in 2006.

To give you an idea of the sheer size of this power usage, just one megawatt is enough to power 200 average-size homes.

Wednesday's record forced The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, to ask residents to cut back on their power usage and offer recommendations on how to do so.

The state had been expecting another surge Thursday, but officials say they are running about 1,000 megawatts under the forecast, and say things will drop through the weekend.
