Police say the boy was detained Friday at Kilgore High School and charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon in a prohibited place, a 3rd degree felony.
Supt. Jody Clements told The Associated Press that another student reported the sophomore had a .22-caliber gun on campus and was "shopping it around."
Clements says the gun was found in the bathroom of a shop building, wrapped in a towel and hidden in the ceiling. Nobody was hurt.
Police are trying to determine who owns the gun.
A juvenile probation official told AP there was no attorney of record yet for the boy, who has been suspended from school.
