Council has questions about police recruiting

HOUSTON The council tabled a $750,000 Internet and print recruiting contract with Patriot Advertising, saying it wants the police department to answer several questions about the effectiveness of outside ads, and what HPD does on its own to recruit new cadets.

"On this critical issue, when we are allocating $750,000, we need to make sure we're getting our money's worth," stressed council member Anne Clutterbuck.

Council members also want to see more advertising aimed at recruiting minorities. HPD wants to hire about 1,300 more officers.
