"I can't believe it," said neighbor Terry Govan. "It's a shock."
What began as child's play between two teenage brothers inside their apartment ended in a way no one would have ever imagined. Police say 17-year -old Robert Benton, who friends called 'Duney,' was fatally stabbed in the stomach by his own brother, two years his junior.
"He always used to come and sit on my couch, look at movies, come and get my son," said neighbor Sharonica Watt. "It's devastating."
The 15-year-old who police arrested Wednesday has since been charged with murder. Dequawnshay Govan, 14, an upstairs neighbor, says she saw it.
"They had stopped fighting and went by the kitchen and started watching on the computer and (suspect) hit Duney again. Then they started fighting and (suspect) picked up the knife and stabbed Duney."
While neighbors initially said the two brothers were arguing over a video game, relatives say that had nothing to do with it. According to an aunt, the 15-year-old had a history of mental illness and suffered from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for which he was taking medication.
"Most of the time, they were good friends, but they would tick each other off sometimes," said neighbor Terry Govan.
While the 15-year-old remains behind bars at the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center awaiting his first court appearance, neighbors and family struggle to understand how something so devastating could happen two brothers who thought of each other as friends.
