US wildlife refuge in danger

The Chandeleur and Breton islands, a chain of barrier islands southeast of New Orleans and the nation's second oldest national wildlife refuge, are in danger of being lost unless they are restored, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Friday. In the past four years the islands have been battered by hurricanes and they took a huge beating from 2005's Hurricane Katrina, which "reduced the islands by one-half of their pre-storm size," the agency said in a new report.

To ensure the longevity and health of the islands, the nation should pour money into restoring the refuge, the report said.
