Man charged in alleged Internet sex case

FRIENDSWOOD, TX At about 1:30am, a Friendswood officer on routine patrol stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 2600 block of S. Friendswood Drive. The driver, Sean Caruthers, 38, couldn't provide proof of insurance and was detained.

Officers spoke to the passenger in the car, a 14-year-old male. The teen made an outcry to the police officers saying he had been sexually assaulted by the older man. Caruthers was subsequently taken into custody for sexual assault of a child.

During questioning, it was determined that the pair had met on the Internet and subsequently met in person several times. It was also determined that at least four incidents of sexual activity involving the teen and Caruthers had occurred. The Galveston County District Attorney accepted a charge for each of the alleged incidents, setting a total bond of $160,000 on Caruthers.

Police say Caruthers does not appear to have any previous criminal history. The investigation is in its initial stages and police have not yet determined what Internet site or sites may be involved, or if there may be other victims.
