Pearland Academic Decathlon team sweeps state

PEARLAND, TX "Our students have worked diligently for this championship since last April. There is no substitute for effort," said Margo Gigee, director of advanced academics and IB programmes.

Ranked No. 1 in Texas after a regional competition, the eight-member team sealed its state championship title last weekend at the state meet in Plano. Students scored 50,595 out of 60,000 possible points -- about 3,000 more points than second- and third-ranked Nimitz and Plano Senior high schools. The win advances them to the national competition in Garden Grove, Calif., April 30 to May 3.

"Our students excelled in every category this past weekend, and we will continue to work extremely hard to bring home a national championship," head coach Robert Layne said.

The eight state hopefuls left in glory during a school-wide sendoff Feb. 28 as classmates beat brass and drums, sang the PHS fight song and waved messages like "We believe in you. Bring home the medals!" Teammates Andrew Hartman, Samuel Mayfield, Danielle Rodriguez, Ross Watson, Sijia Wang, Edie Wu, Sophy Lee and Jackie Vu made Pearland ISD proud.
