Off-duty HPD officer opens fire on suspects outside Edwards theater

HOUSTON

The off-duty police officer and his girlfriend were leaving the Edwards movie theater on Weslayan near Portsmouth when a car pulled up beside them. The officer told police he thought the driver was going to ask for directions.

But instead, someone inside the car pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officer and his girlfriend. Investigators say the officer's training kicked in and he knew exactly what to do.

"The officer drew his duty weapon and discharged more than once, striking the vehicle which then fled eastbound on Portsmouth," said Kese Smith with the Houston Police Department.

The officer and his girlfriend were not hurt.
