Tropical Storm Karen forms in southern Gulf of Mexico

HOUSTON

Right now, TS Karen has winds of up to 60 miles per hour.

Hurricane watches are up from Grand Isle, LA to Indian Pass, FL. Tropical storm watches extend as far west as Morgan City, LA (central LA coast) and the tropical storm watch does include New Orleans, according to ABC13 Meteorologist Travis Herzog.

The system is expected to stay well to our east, thanks to a front moving in this weekend. The official forecast calls for Karen to stay near Category 1 hurricane intensity at landfall late Saturday or early Sunday. Karen should make landfall anywhere from eastern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.

Heavy rains could affect portions of Cuba and The Yucatan Peninsula during the next day or two.
