From backpack giveaways to back-to-school shopping, getting ready for class can entail some tough choices.
"This is pretty much what I'm looking for, but that camo really caught my eye," said Paden Boothe as he compared to backpacks while back-to-school shopping Sunday.
Getting ready for class can entail some tough choices
"Plenty of room, because at my school we have a lot of homework. I want it to be able to withstand weather," Paden, describing what he was looking for in a good backpack for the new school year.
And there are plenty of changes happening in Houston ISD. For example, students who left Ryan Middle School in the spring will be joining students at Cullen Middle School
"I think it'll be a good experience for her because it's a new school and it's a different age group of kids that's going to be around," parent Paulette garner said of the switch.
Over the weekend, final touches were added to the former Ryan Middle School, which is now Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan -- a unique concept to expose middle school students to careers in health before moving on to DeBakey High School.
"For as a principal, I don't know how to express the excitement I have," Jyoti Malhan, principal of the new Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan. "And then I have so much interest from parents, from students -- a waiting list."
While kids and parents have mixed emotions on this last day, summer fun is over and it's back to the books.
"We're trying to get everything done and lined up for tomorrow," parent Ann Booth said.
Don't forget school zones will be back in operation. HISD also has two new elementary schools opening as part of a 2007 bond program. The final school in that program is expected to open in about a month.
