Leander officer with warrant shoots therapy dog

LEANDER, TX

Homeowner James Simmons said Tuesday that the Leander police officer had the wrong house.

Police say Officer Woodson Blase felt threatened when he opened fire Monday and shot a 3-year-old German shepherd named Vinny. Police say Vinny and another dog were running toward the officer.

Simmons says Vinny was shot through the neck as his 6-year-old grandson played nearby. The boy wasn't hurt.

The homeowner's wife has been a professional dog trainer for more than 30 years. Renata Simmons says people are always coming and going through their yard and Vinny, who's recovering from the wound, is not aggressive.

The officer remains on active duty.
