Former University of Houston coach Guy Lewis to be elected to Basketball Hall of Fame

HOUSTON

This has been an emotional issue for so many who played for Guy Lewis at U of H. Clyde Drexler recently told Eyewitness Sports he would never understand why Lewis wasn't in years ago. Now finally the wait is over.

Lewis will join the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of its newest class. The official announcement will come Monday at the Final Four in Atlanta. After starring as a player at Houston, Lewis coached the Cougars to five Final Four berths in 30 years.

Lewis' election feels like a long-running wrong has finally been made right.

"I get emotional all the time when I talk about it, so I'm gonna try to get through this," said Kenneth "Juice" Williams, UH player from '76 - '80. "He took a kid like me out of the ghetto and was like a father figure for me. A man who will give you his shirt off his back; a father, but a good man."

Lewis compiled an overall coaching record of 592-279, including a 134-98 conference record. He had three 30-win seasons and 14 with 20 or more.
