The local friends of a man injured in the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting came together Saturday to raise funds to help him pay medical expenses.

Brent Lowak was a native Texan in Colorado on vacation. He was with his friend Jessica Ghawi when she was shot and killed at the movie theater.

Some of his local friends organized a fundraiser for the 27-year-old. It was held Saturday at Saint Arnold Brewing Co. and raised more than $4,000.

Lowak was seriously injured during the shooting. They say he's already undergone several surgeries, and the money raised this weekend through raffles, auctions and food sales will help Lowak with those bills and the cost of continuing his recovery.

"He's doing better. He's been through three surgeries, so, I know I've heard it's been a little rough," friend Haley Polak said. "He took a few steps a couple days ago."

His friends say he is back home in Texas recovering, and he has posted a note on Facebook thanking everyone for their support.
