DWI driver convicted of 2007 San Antonio wreck

SAN ANTONIO, TX

The penalty phase begins Tuesday in San Antonio for 32-year-old Jenny Ybarra of Seguin.

A jury on Monday convicted Ybarra of intoxication manslaughter, manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and assault.

Ybarra faces up to 20 years in prison over the death of 23-year-old Erica Smith. Smith was a passenger in a car struck by Ybarra, who was driving the wrong way.

Regulators in 2008 suspended the certifications of three San Antonio paramedics, who did not immediately check the gravely injured Smith, thinking she had not survived. Smith several hours later was transported to a hospital, where she died.
