BP fuel spill shuts down Texas City Dike

TEXAS CITY, TX

Texas City police say about 60 barrels of fuel oil were being loaded around 5:30pm on to a barge off of Dock 34 when the spill happened. The oil barrels belonged to BP but said the barge is owned by Buffalo Marine.

The spill, police say, is relatively minor but the wind is complicating the cleanup effort.

Crews have closed down the dike roads but they hope to have them reopened by Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, BP issued the following the statement regarding the spill:

"Since the incident began, BP has been in continuous contact with the barge owner, the City of Texas City, the Coast Guard, and Garner Environmental to assist in the response.

"BP will continue to coordinate with all the relevant parties to support the response."
