Woman hurt jumping to safety from burning apartment

HOUSTON The blaze broke out in the Forest Creek apartment complex in the 5900 block of Uvalde around 9am Friday.

According to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office, a woman was hurt when she jumped to safety from the burning building. A firefighter was also injured when he fell through the floor in an upstairs unit. Both were taken to a local hospital and are listed as stable.

"We have determined that a young child was playing with fire in the downstairs apartment when a couch caught fire," said Lieutenant Dean Hensley with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office. "The fire was contained to two apartments, but the other units in the building received smoke and water damage."

Firefighters with the Cloverleaf, Sheldon, Channelview, Houston and other area fire departments responded to the blaze.
