AUSTIN, TX --
With the Texas Legislature set to reconvene next week, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison says she is "very worried" about looming state budget cuts in higher education. Hutchison, who gave a speech about the importance of scientific research Friday in Austin, says that "even in our most austere times" higher education dollars would help Texas keep good jobs that fuel the economy.
As for her own plans, Hutchison declined to say whether she might again run for the U.S. Senate when her term expires in 2012. The Republican senator had adamantly vowed to step down from her seat when she was running for governor, but since losing the 2010 race she has wavered.
She says, "I'm just not talking about it today -- just not talking."
