Toddler hit, killed by family member's car

HOUSTON Harris County investigators were called to a home in the 15000 block of North Telge Manor late Tuesday night to investigate.

Officials say Jose Cantu was pulling into his home's driveway around 6:30pm when he felt a bump. Cantu was driving a Dodge Magnum when he hit his one-year-old daughter, Alexa Cantu.

Officials say Alexas was playing outside with other children. Investigators do believe there was adult supervision, but there was nothing the man could do to avoid this accident.

The girl was transported to North Cypress Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

"There's no reason to think that alcohol or drugs are involved," Harris County Deputy Duane Soots said. "He was just simply on his way home. It was a little bit after dark so visibility was kinda poor. There was another vehicle in the driveway at the time, and that child appeared to have come out from in front of that vehicle, so we think at this time, it's just a tragic accident."

As per protocol, the sheriff's office is referring the case to the Harris County District Attorney's Office, though they don't suspect any criminal charges to be filed against Cantu.

Soots says the incident is a horrible reminder to everyone to always be on the lookout for children.
