Suspects ID'd in jewel heist and child abandonment

CENTER CITY, PA

The suspects have been identified as the boy's parents. They are 47-year-old John Benson and 31-year-old Sheakia Stubbs.

Investigators say the couple was arrested around midnight at the Hub Motel on Roosevelt Boulevard.

The arresting officers said Benson and Stubbs made no mention and did not ask about the boy they left behind. Police say the child did help identify Benson and Stubbs as the suspects.

The robbery happened at around 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Platinum and Ice jewelry store in Center City.

Police say Benson and Stubbs entered the store on South Street with the 4-year-old boy.

They snatched a tray of rings worth $100,000 and ran with the boy in tow.

The store owner and his employee chased, and caught up to the fleeing couple on Rodman Street.

Police say Benson then pulled a knife.

"There was a verbal encounter where the male let go of the child's hand and slashed the store owner. Then they turned and ran, leaving the child behind," Captain Lawrence Nodiff of the Philadelphia Police said.

The store owner needed a dozen stitches in the neck.
