Family loses everything to apartment fire

HOUSTON Firefighters were called out around 9am to the Suncrest Village apartments on Beechnut at Wilcrest in west Houston. Margaret Spry, who lived inside the apartment, says she woke up to the smell of smoke and saw that the kitchen was on fire. She was able to get her adult daughter and two young grandchildren out safely.

"They didn't know what was going on because I had to wake them up and just take them in and get them out of there," she said. "It just went up into flames so fast."

Spry says the family had just finished their Christmas shopping, but now have nothing more than the clothes they were wearing.

Firefighters say a firewall between the units helped them keep the fire from spreading to other units. There were no injuries.
