What to know about HISD's cell phone policy as students return to class

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- As the Houston Independent School District returns to school, there is a rule in place that parents should know about when it comes to students' cell phones.

The "No Personal Communication Device" rule bans cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, headphones and earbuds, and smart glasses during the school day, which runs from when students arrive on campus in the morning until the final period of the day.

HISD said lunch and passing periods are also included.

According to the district, the policy is in accordance with House Bill 1481, a Texas law passed last year that prohibits "student use of all personal communication devices on school property during the school day."

The district said the devices will have to be stored away in backpacks or lockers, adding that students will only be allowed to use district-provided devices during class time.

Exceptions include students who have approved medical needs, a documented need based on a directive from a qualified physician, or special education needs. For more information about the district's cell phone policy, parents can visit HISD's website.
