HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Homeowners in a Humble-area neighborhood are cleaning up broken glass and bullet-damaged walls after gunfire erupted early Monday morning at the end of a birthday party, sending one woman to the hospital
A 15-year-old boy is being detained by the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office.
Deputies were called to a home on Liles Street shortly after 2 a.m., authorities said, where they found a woman who had been shot in the leg.
Neighbors said a loud birthday party had been going on at the house for hours, but the shooting didn't happen until after everyone nearby had gone to bed.
Tea'erra Adams, whose family car had its windows shot out, said she initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks.
"At first I was like, it's fireworks," Adams said. "And then no, it's not - because who is shooting fireworks at 2 in the morning, on a random day?"
Neighbor Michele Cuellar said she and her husband were jolted awake by a rapid burst of gunfire.
"We heard a round of gunshots, I don't know, six to eight shots, right in a row," Cuellar said. "My husband rolled over, and I said, call 911. He immediately called."
The shooting left bullet casings scattered in one neighbor's yard, and at least two rounds pierced the walls of another nearby home.
Cuellar said the residence has been a source of ongoing problems since its current occupants moved in, including a loud argument in the yard just days before the shooting.
"It's very frightening, scary, whenever they're arguing," she said. "You never know when it's going to work out over here."
People inside the home didn't want to speak on camera but confirmed a shooting had occurred there during the birthday party, and that a woman was in the hospital.
Adams said she's hoping this is the last time her family has to repair their car because of someone else's gunfire.
"It's scary because you're just waking up to the sound of bullets, and you don't know what's happened," she said.
Because the suspect is a minor, authorities have not released information on any charges he may face. The woman who was shot is expected to recover.
