Three-alarm fire burns apt. complex

HOUSTON Firefighters arrived at "The Woods on Augusta" along Augusta near Woodway to find fire and smoke shooting from the second floor. Firefighters made a fast attack, but they weren't able to stop the fire before it reached the attic.

One resident says he was inside his unit when he heard all the commotion.

"We came out to take a look and noticed this side of the building was on fire. It worked its way down that side, jumped across to our side and came on back," explained fire victim John Berleth. "At that point we just started grabbing, you know, got our dogs, got a few things that we could and just got out of there. All we can do now is just watch."

There were 16 units in the building. Firefighters say the upper floor is a total loss. The downstairs units received a lot of water and smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
