'Leave-behinds' increase in checkout lines

HOUSTON Retail consultants estimate that in one out of every four trips to the store, shoppers get cold feet at the checkout, and ditch at least one item. The experts say people love the act of shopping, but the act of buying is a different story.

Some shoppers are also paying closer attention to the bottom line. They'll watch as the clerk scans items and when they hit their limit, they leave something behind in their basket.
