Man drowns off Galveston Beach

August 3, 2009 4:48:34 AM PDT
One swimmer died and two lifeguards suffered cuts from jetty rocks trying to save him during strong currents off Galveston. Galveston Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis says the man who died Sunday afternoon had been boogie boarding when he went under. The name of the victim was not immediately released.

The Galveston County Daily News reported Monday that two lifeguards were transported to a hospital for treatment of cuts from the rocks.

Davis says nearly two dozen swimmers had to be rescued over the weekend, including 15 on Sunday.

Davis says the current around the jetties was especially strong.
