San Antonio considers closing 21 schools

July 29, 2009 7:09:15 AM PDT
More than 20 public schools in San Antonio may close under a plan that could save the city's shrinking school district as much as $40 million a year. The San Antonio Independent School District has experienced declining enrollment for 40 years. About 55,000 students attend public schools in the nation's seventh-largest city.

The San Antonio Express-News reported Wednesday that closing 21 schools is the most dramatic of three plans put forth by an advisory committee. Eight public meetings are planned for August and September to discuss the proposals.

The proposed closures would take place over a decade, with the first coming no earlier than 2010.
