Ex-ballplayer pleads guilty in deadbeat dad case

SAN ANTONIO, TX Neel entered his plea Thursday in a San Antonio federal courtroom. The 43-year-old faces up to two years in prison.

Federal prosecutors say Neel purchased a resort island in the Republic of Vanuatu for a reported $1.5 million. Authorities say Neel lived there to avoid paying the monthly $5,000 child support payments for his two children.

Neel played for the A's from 1992 to 1994. He continued his career in Japan and Korea before retiring in 2001.
