Employees take pay cut to keep jobs

Galveston's police officers and firefighters have agreed to a pay cut to save their jobs. [SIGN UP: Get headlines and breaking news sent to you]

The move will help the city of Galveston cut expenditures from its ailing budget. Out of 188 police officers and firefighters, only a small number did not want a pay cut. The expected cuts must be approved by the Galveston City Council.

Officials say a drop in property tax and permit revenue left them with no choice but to ask police and fire departments to take a pay cut.
