Wrong-way drivers are among the most dangerous problems you could face while behind the wheel, and the numbers prove it. A Texas Transportation Institute study shows just how destructive a wrong-way driver can be.
Fifty percent of wrong-way crashes resulted in incapacitating injury or death - much higher than the average wreck.
The study also found that wrong-way crashes are more likely to happen in the overnight hours, with the most frequent time for crashes being between 2 and 3 in the morning. Traffic officers at the Harris County Toll Road Authority tell us the most likely place to find a wrong-way driver is a freeway exit ramp.
And most wrong-way drivers are impaired. In more than 60 percent of wrong-way crashes, drivers were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
