WWII vet says Army taught discipline, cheap price of soldier's life

Douglas Jim Hooey, a 92-year-old World War II veteran from Coldspring, grew up believing he was an obedient child. Even so, it wasn't the level of obedience that would be expected of him in the US Army during the war.

Stationed in Fort Clark, Texas, with the 2nd Cavalry Division, Hooey was drafted at a time when the war was starting to wind down. Therefore he never saw any overseas military action.

The lessons he learned at Fort Clark taught him more about discipline and the importance of following orders, and about the cheap price placed on a soldier's life.
