HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- After Thursday's storm system produced at least five confirmed tornadoes, we get a day of sunshine and pleasant weather for Friday before storms return on Saturday.

Temperatures overnight will drop into the 40s and 50s across most of southeast Texas as a weak cold front blows offshore. A dry southwesterly wind and sunshine will spike the temperatures back into the mid-70s during the afternoon, but it'll be a much better day for the kids to test out their new toys outside.

How's the last weekend of 2024 shaping up?

Another stormy weather system will blow through here on Saturday, but this time, the greatest risk for severe weather will be well to our east in Louisiana and Mississippi. Expect a chance for scattered thunderstorms in the morning that will quickly move out. Then, a line of showers and storms will push through in the afternoon as our next weak cold front blows in. This will set the stage for really nice weather on Sunday. After morning lows near 50, sunshine will push highs into the 70s.

What about New Year's Eve?

A cold front is expected to move through New Year's Eve early in the morning and should pass through dry. While this isn't expected to be a stormy front, it will send temperatures back down into chilly territory for the New Year, with midnight temperatures in the 40s.

When could we get our first freeze in Houston?

We see no signs of freezing temperatures in southeast Texas over the next 10 days. Long-range projections indicate a pattern change is coming to kick off the new year that should lead to chillier weather and a chance for a freeze during the first two weeks of January. On average, Houston's first freeze occurs during the second week of December.

We're tracking storms for Christmas Eve, but most of us may not see them until after the sun sets. The ABC13 weather team has the timing.
