A summer front brings a chance for showers and storms this weekend

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Our hot weather will continue this weekend but a summer front blows in a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Until then, it's mostly dry with the humidity and heat combo near dangerous levels.

It'll be steamy again Friday with morning lows starting in the upper 70s, afternoon highs reaching the upper 90s with an afternoon heat index between 105 and 107.

When will the rain chance return?

A summer cool front will get close enough to us by the weekend to warrant at least a 30% chance of rain late Saturday through Sunday. There's also the chance a few showers and storms could be on the strong side, especially Saturday night. Most of the daytime will be rain-free, but when the front pushes in from the north Saturday evening, strong thunderstorms could develop in the hot, unstable air. Sunday's rain chance depends on how quickly the front pushes through. For now we think there will be some showers lingering into the morning, especially south of I-10.

Any severe weather of flooding expected this weekend?

A few storms that develop ahead of and along this cool front Saturday night could be on the stronger side, especially north of Houston and the I-10 corridor. The main concerns will be strong wind gusts and locally heavy rainfall as well as thunder and lighting. If you have any plans late Saturday evening into the night, this is something to be aware of that night. And while some of these storms could produce heavy downpours and rainfall rates of 1-3 inches an hour, flooding is not expected at this time this weekend. A few showers and storms could also linger into Sunday morning though we are not expecting those to be strong to severe at this time.
