Storm chances climb for the weekend, ABC13 Weather Alert posted for Beryl next week

Houston weather: Storm chances climb for the weekend, ABC13 Weather Alert posted for Beryl next week
A Hurricane and Storm Surge Watch are now up for the Texas Coastline from the mouth of the Rio Grande all the way up to Sargent near the border of Matagorda and Brazoria County.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Beryl is currently a tropical storm over the Yucatan Peninsula but is expected to move into the Gulf by late tonight. The NHC has been shifting the track to the east showing a landfall somewhere between Brownsville and Matagorda Bay of at least a Category 1 hurricane late Sunday into Monday. Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches are now in effect for parts of the Texas coastline from the Rio Grande up to Sargent. The rest of our coastline including Galveston, Galveston Bay, and the Bolivar Peninsula are under a coastal flood watch through the weekend.

Outside of Beryl, we are also expecting a boundary to drop in from the north tonight into Saturday and this boundary could help initiate some showers and storms in SE Texas mainly in the afternoon to evening. We could also see some isolated rain in the morning closer to the coastline. Storms will be a possibility so make sure you can head indoors if you hear thunder.

Hot Friday with a chance of rain

Rain chances climb to 30% in the afternoon as temperatures warm to near 100. The sea breeze front coming in from the Gulf will pop up a few showers as usual, but we'll also see a boundary pushing in from North Texas that could trigger some late afternoon and evening showers north of Houston.

How's the rest of the holiday weekend look?

Storm chances will climb to 60% on Saturday as the boundary stalls out north of I-10 and bubbles up more rain clouds in the afternoon heat. Rain chances are higher than 60% in counties northwest of Harris county, with those locations carrying a 70% chance of rain. The boundary lifts away from us on Sunday, which will bring rain chances back down to 30%. High temperatures both days will be in the mid 90s with an afternoon heat index making it feel like 105 to 108 degrees each day.

How will Hurricane Beryl impact Southeast Texas next week?

A Hurricane and Storm Surge Watch are now in effect along the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande to Sargent, Texas near the border of Matagorda and Brazoria Counties. Up to 5 feet of storm surge is expected at this time. Landfall is expected to occur along the middle Texas coast on Monday with Beryl strengthening toward category 2 intensity. Note that the exact landfall point is still uncertain at this time, and the track could shift farther east putting more of Southeast Texas at risk of hurricane winds and storm surge flooding. Regardless, this is looking like a high impact storm for Southeast Texas, and we need to be prepared for the impacts of this hurricane to arrive as early as Sunday night and continue through Monday. Because we believe the brunt of the impacts will be felt on Monday, that is now an ABC13 Weather Alert Day.
