Houston Weather: Rain chances continue along with flood threat through work week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Today is just the start of what will be a very messy and wet week in SE TX.

A disturbance moved through Southeast TX today popping up showers and storms. Areas southwest of Harris County especially in Matagorda, Jackson, Wharton, and Brazoria counties received high rainfall totals which led to flooding... some areas reported over 10 inches of rain!

Tonight, we should see our rain chances go down a bit although a few showers and storms cannot be ruled out overnight. Rain chances will pick back up Monday morning as another disturbance brings us another chance for scattered showers and storms. The potential for an isolated severe storm and isolated street flooding will also be possible Monday.

What can we expect with the bigger weather system after the weekend?
Another disturbance will move in Monday bringing in chance for scattered showers and storms. Rain chances will be even higher as we head into Tuesday, Wednesday. and Thursday. This storm system has the potential to bring widespread rain to Texas, including heavy, training thunderstorms. We expect to pick up several inches of rain area-wide, and need to be aware for the potential to see some street flooding.

Could any storms turn severe?
While street flooding will be our primary concern, it is possible that an isolated storm or two could turn severe. If it does, main threats will be hail around quarter size and wind gusts up to 60 mph. The tornado threat is low but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

When will rain chances come to an end?
The highest chances of rain over the next 10 days will take place during this work week but moisture will still be sticking around keeping rain chances in the forecast through the weekend and into the start of the following week.
