The first person in New York state to be diagnosed with eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in nearly a decade has died, Gov. Kathy Hochul's office announced Monday.
According to the city, the virus was confirmed in a mosquito trapped near Mason Road and Oakwood Lane. Officials said it will continue citywide spraying and work with the TDSH to trap and test mosquitoes.
Health officials are reporting at least eighteen deaths from West Nile virus in the U.S. this year, with three recent deaths recorded in Wisconsin and Illinois. There have been six cases of EEE, including one person who died after testing positive for the virus, as well as dengue cases recorded in several states.
A once-energetic father is now relying on a machine to help him breathe after his son says the West Nile Virus left him unable to speak and barely able to make minor facial gestures.
The patient is a woman in her 30s who was exposed in the area of Plymouth County, in the southeastern part of the state.
