20-year-old woman charged with intoxicated manslaughter after deadly crash on Southwest Freeway, Houston Police Department says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A 20-year-old woman has been charged with intoxicated manslaughter after a crash on the Southwest Freeway on Sunday morning left another woman dead, police say.

According to the Houston Police Department, the deadly crash happened in the 6000 block of Southwest Freeway at about 1:45 a.m.

Investigators said a blue Acura RSX pulled over onto the left shoulder of the freeway after it lost its front bumper when it was traveling northbound. The driver exited the Acura to pick up the bumper from the road, officials said, while a passenger remained inside the car.

Police said a gray Ford Mustang also traveling northbound then grazed the driver before crashing into the rear of the Acura. The crash caused both vehicles to catch on fire, authorirties said.

The passenger inside the Acura, identified as a 26-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The 27-year-old driver of the Acura was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, officials said.

The driver of the Ford, identified as 20-year-old Niya Maman, was not injured and was determined to be impaired, investigators said. HPD said Maman was arrested and charged with intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle.
