The Colorado Rapids and visiting Houston Dynamo both struggled throughout the night to create chances Saturday night, playing to a 0-0 draw at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
Houston's Steve Clark mad three saves and Colorado's William Yarbrough two, with Yarbrough arguably making the more difficult saves.
But neither was worked particularly hard on a night the last-place Rapids (3-10-10, 19 points) played to their fourth scoreless result in their last five home matches and seventh of the season overall.
Clark now has eight clean sheets on the season, while Yarbrough has seven.
Houston (8-10-5, 29 points) also failed to score for a third time during a four-match winless run, while sinking one spot to ninth place in the Western Conference.
That's the final rung above the playoff line as the league takes a month-long break for the Leagues Cup to be contested between every team from MLS and LigaMX.
Both the Dynamo and the Rapids have 11 regular-season matches remaining when the season resumes in mid-August.
The Dynamo will be looking to return to the postseason for the first time since 2017, while the Rapids are in danger of missing the postseason in back-to-back years.
Each team had only one shot on goal through the opening hour, with both struck from long range and giving each goalkeeper little trouble.
In the 70th minute, Michael Barrios found some space in transition for Colorado but his dipping effort from 20 yards out required only a routine save from Clark.
The Houston goalkeeper also denied Cole Bassett in transition at the near post in the 82nd minute.
Yarbrough had to be alert in the 89th when he dove left to deny Corey Baird's one-time effort after a layoff from Nelson Quinones.
That denied Houston a late victory they wouldn't have deserved. But the Dynamo still earned just their sixth point away from home in 12 matches.
