Foti High Five: Local girls raise money and care for deaf police horse

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A group of girls have raised tens of thousands of dollars to help a special needs police horse. This week, they were given a Foti High Five for their years of dedication to the horse named "Smash."

The girls, who've named themselves the "Smash Girls," came together at a birthday party and were introduced to Smash.

"He was kind a lonely by himself. He did not have any sponsors," said Katherine Richards.

The girls asked the Houston Police Department if they could sponsor Smash. They were approved, and soon after, they hosted a bake sale to raise the $5,000 needed for a one-year sponsorship. The girls were able raise double that amount.

"He means the world. I love that horse," said Meg Norman.

Several times a week, the Smash Girls visit the deaf horse. They take care of his stable, groom him and spend time feeding him.

"We just had that special bond with him. He's helped us and we have helped him," said Norman.
