Stray bullet kills teen in a SW Houston apartment
The family apparently moved to Houston, like many other immigrant families, for a chance at a better life, only to be struck by tragedy

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston police are investigating a deadly shooting at a Sharpstown area apartment complex after a 16-year-old was shot inside an upstairs apartment unit.

The shooting happened just after midnight at the Happy Village Apartments on 6301 Ranchester Drive near Bellaire Blvd.

Family members identify the teen as David Yac, 16, of Guatemala. According to HPD, he has been here since February.

Family members say the teen was in a room upstairs getting his clothes from his closet when they heard a single gunshot and then heard glass breaking.

They came upstairs and found the teen shot in the head. He died at the scene.

Yac's cousin tells Eyewitness News the teen's mother, who was in the kitchen at the time of the shooting, is devastated. The family apparently came to Houston, like many other immigrant families, for a chance at a better life, only to be struck by tragedy.

"It's a big loss because he was only 16," said cousin Alfredo Yac. "He was just a kid, just a child."

"I just want to know who did it, I want to make sure that they don't come back," said neighbor Stephanie Daniel. "I live right here on the side of the street. I don't want that happening to me."

HPD believes this was a random shooting and do not believe the teen was targeted.

HPD says a few hours earlier, witnesses a few blocks away heard two gunshots. Witnesses in another area also heard one or two gunshots. Witnesses believe it was coming from a black truck. Houston police are now investigating those claims.
