Sculpted in Steel: Classic car exhibit at The Museum of Fine Arts
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is hosting an exhibit of automobiles that are so beautifully sculpted, they can best be described as works of art. The cars come from a different era. A time when fuel efficiency didn't matter, glamour trumped comfort, and steel was sexy.
Sculpted in Steel: Art Deco Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1929-1940 celebrates the cars and motorcycles designed during this iconic period.
"It makes you wonder why today we have such boring cars," laughed Olivier Thierry, who was visiting the museum.
The 14 cars and three motorcycles on show at the exhibition demonstrate the elegance of this era, which introduced concepts such as aerodynamic design and chrome detailing to vehicles.
"They're all in perfect condition, beautifully maintained," said MFAH's director, Garry Tinterow." They have ostrich skin, elephant skin interiors. Hermes upholstery."
