Up and coming Russian boxer starring in Houston fight
There's a big time fight at the Bayou City Center, and on the card is a young man who just moved to the States just a year ago and has the makings of something special

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Radmir Akhmediyev moved to the United States last year, without knowing the language and without knowing a single person.

Akhmediyev's left his life in Kazakhstan to follow his dream of becoming a world champion fighter. Leaving his homeland might seem like a gamble, but for Akhmediyev, it was a easy.

"The United States is like the mecca for boxing," said Akhmediyev. Everyone has a dream to come United States and be a pro."

Former Heavyweight Champion of the world and boxing promoter Lou Savarese is a boxing historian, and believes good boxers are built with rough upbringings.

"You know it's always the people who are lowest on the social totem pole and live usually through rough times, that create good fighters," says Savarese.

Akhmediyev is undefeated in five professional fights, and apparently he lives in the gym.

"We came in here Sunday, just to do a little workout and he is in here. I told him we are going to start charging him by the hour, he is here six or seven hours a day," says Savarese. "He lives right down the street. He left his family, all by himself -- never complains."
