Cause of death remains a mystery in a deadly fire in Rosenberg

ROSENBERG, TX (KTRK) -- Rosenberg police officers are still waiting to learn exactly how 32-year-old Nancy Dean died.

On Tuesday, the medical examiner's office said it did an autopsy, but still needed to do additional testing to determine the official cause of death. The additional testing could take several days.

Dean was found dead inside of her Rosenberg home after it caught fire on Saturday. Police are calling the fire suspicious and are waiting on the medical examiner to determine if the death is a homicide, or accidental.

Police say there are several persons of interests, but they have not said who those individuals are.

One person who was questioned about the fire lives just around the block from Dean.

"He never told me what they talked about," said Valentin Gonzales the father of the man questioned in the incident. He said officers came to his house to question his son.

Gonzales said his son talked to officers at the crime scene for several hours on Saturday.

Gonzales said after that, investigators returned to the Gonzales' home two additional times, each time to collect his son's clothing.

"He told me Sunday morning that he don't have nothing to do with it," said Gonzales.

His son is a registered sex offender and has spent time in prison. Gonzales believes that's why officers questioned his son.

"The reason they have to investigate him is because he spent 25 years in prison and he just came out," said Gonzales.

Dean's loved ones just want answers as to what happened.

Family friend, Vicki Littleton, watched Nancy Dean grown up. She was devastated when she heard the news.

"I just died and started crying because they're saying she was burned beyond recognition," said Littleton.

Littleton says Dean will be missed.

"She was very sweet and nice and she loved to help other people. My sons loved her very much, I hope justice will be done," said Littleton.
