HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- The Harris County Sheriff's Office says a man was fatally stabbed while attempting to break into an apartment on Tuesday morning.
According to HCSO, deputies responded to an apartment complex at about 5 a.m. at 8200 Sunbury Lane and found a 43-year-old man dead with a stab wound.
HCSO Sgt. Jason Brown said the man was trying to get into an apartment before shattering a window and climbing through it. He says it went on for about 15 minutes while the residents called 911. Brown says once inside, he was stabbed by someone inside the apartment.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez initially said the man was possibly intoxicated. Brown says that will be determined by an autopsy.
"As of right now, we don't have any connection between this individual and the occupants of the apartment," Brown said. "It's possible that it may have been a case of mistaken identity as far as the individual trying to get in. This individual was also possibly involved in a disturbance earlier in the night at the property. We're looking into that at the moment."
The sergeant said they don't believe the man knew anyone inside the apartment or had any connection with them. He added that the previous disturbance could have been between the man killed and another person who lives at the apartment complex.
Investigators said they believe that the 43-year-old who died could have lived at the complex.
As for charges related to the stabbing, the sheriff's office said the case will likely go to a grand jury.
